How To Apply
Proper surface preparation is essential to assure maximum performance. Wood must be clean and dry. Mildew must be treated prior to stain application with appropriate product and/or procedure. Mildew is not caused by Preserva Wood®. The cured sealant is mildew resistant. When cleaning, be sure to use a quality, environmentally safe wood cleaner such as Preserva Products™ Wood Renewer™ Cleaner.
Mix vigorously making sure that all pigment on the bottom of the can has been suspended in solution. Re-mix every 10-15 minutes while using product. Blend together all containers of Preserva Wood® when using multiple gallon or quart sizes. Use a pigmented version of Preserva Wood® for maximum color retention. Do not thin product. Preserva Wood® should be used as it comes in the can. Coverage should be calculated at a rate of 200 to 400 square feet per gallon. Rough wood will use more product than smooth wood.e (5) gallons of water to one (1) gallon of cleaner.
Cover plants, trees, concrete, siding, etc. to protect from spills and overspray. Apply a small amount of product in an inconspicuous area to test for penetration and color satisfaction before continuing with the entire treatment process. Allow test area to dry thoroughly as stain is darker when first applied.
Be sure that the weather will be clear and dry for 24 hours after application of Preserva Wood®. Apply to decks with brush or paint pad (avoid using a paint roller, as this may result in over-application or uneven application). One coat should be sufficient. Only apply as much as the wood will absorb. Be sure to treat the full length of boards, keeping a wet edge. Two coats may be required on rough or vertical surfaces, however one coat should be sufficient. Brush or spray these surfaces. When possible, apply Preserva Wood® in the cool of the day and not in direct sunlight. Back brush Preserva Wood® into horizontal deck boards, making sure to eliminate puddles. This process will ensure proper penetration and color uniformity. Remove excess stain with a rag before it begins to cure, usually within 15 to 20 minutes.
Be sure to wipe-up any areas that remain shiny or wet after 20 minutes. DO NOT allow Preserva Wood® to dry on the surface. Reapply Preserva Wood® as necessary. Remember do not over apply. Keep in mind that wood will not be as porous as it was prior to the first application. That means that you should use less Preserva Wood® when applying maintenance applications. Dry time will vary from 12 to 24 hours depending on climate, sun exposure, temperature, humidity, and the amount of Preserva Wood® applied.
Tools and equipment should be cleaned with paint thinner. Soak oily rags, clothes, or any application materials in water after use to avoid spontaneous combustion. After soaking in water, rags and applicators must be allowed to air dry away from any source of ignition.
